Evidence of the run down history of American politics and culture. This is from Wikipedia -  "A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction, the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives." She accomplished these first around the time I was born. Read her bio and see other firsts that initially shocked me until I reminded myself of the long sordid history of racism and sexism in this country.
